Das Flue Gas Inert Gas System nutzt die Abgase des Schiffskessels als Inertgas-Quelle — kein separater Generator nötig. Auf VLCCs und großen Crude-Tankern die häufigste Lösung, da der Kessel ohnehin läuft. Smit Gas (Rotterdam, von Alfa Laval übernommen) war Pionier dieser Technologie.
